International Boatbuilding Training College

The IBTC is traditional boat building training and is internationally recognised. They are a City & Guilds and an Edexcel approved centre and are ELCAS registered. They have been building boat builders since 1975. Set up originally to supply skilled workers for the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads yards they now have graduates working in and managing yards all over the world. In 2013 they became the Shipshape hub for the East Anglian region. The IBTC have expanded their operations into Portsmouth Historic Dockyards and in conjunction with the Portsmouth Dockyard Property Trust have successfully secured HLF funding to restore Boatshed 4 into a Boatbuilding & Heritage Skills Training Centre. The Boathouse will become a Centre of Excellence for boatbuilding training, with IBTC Portsmouth and Highbury College delivering practical, intensive courses in traditional boatbuilding and related skills. The Centre will provide annual Heritage Bursaries, offering local people currently unemployed or disengaged with education the opportunity to undertake one year’s full time traditional boatbuilding training, leading to a City and Guilds qualification and an IBTC Portsmouth Diploma. Graduates will leave the Centre with valuable boatbuilding and engineering skills, enabling them to develop careers in the broader heritage and marine sectors. IBTC and the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust are forming a strong partnership and working alongside the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust in order to make the dockyards the home for PSTT and for PSTT to be the afloat arm for operations for the dockyard.
